WHY A CHRISTIAN APOLOGISTS WROTE A BOOK ABOUT ANIMALS IN THE AFTERLIFE

I have to admit that the reason I initially began to research and write a book on animals in the afterlife had nothing to do with apologetics or evangelism. Having loved and lost several dog and cat friends during the past thirty-plus years, like millions of other pet owners, I wondered if I’d see them again in the next life. So I embarked on what would become a three year research journey to learn what the Bible and Christian theologians had to say on the subject. I came away convinced that there is much biblical evidence that our pets and other sentient animals will join God’s people to live forever in the prophesized “new heaven and earth.”

Along the way, I realized that this topic would be a great point of contact with non-Christian pet owners and other animal lovers. Here’s why:

According to the ASPCA, there is an estimated that 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats in the United States. This translates into 37-47% of all households in the United States with at least one dog and 30-37% with at least one cat. With such huge numbers of Americans having pets, is there any doubt that millions of people would like to know the eternal destiny of their beloved pets? And since the most popular and widely accepted religious book in America is the Bible, we have a perfect point of contact for moving the conversation to Christianity.

Look at it like this. Virtually every Christian has non-Christian family members, friends, or coworkers with a pet. Certainly many of them would appreciate insight into the fate of their four legged friends. Likewise, people who love and enjoy nature and wildlife should also find this book thought-provoking and enlightening.

I’m convinced that my newest, soon-to-be-released book (hopefully October 24th), Will Dogs Chase Cats in Heaven? People, Pets, and Wild Animals in the Afterlife, can be a great conversation started with non-Christian pet owners, people who love animals in general—both wild and domesticated—or simply who what to learn more about what the Bible says regarding animals on Earth and in Heaven. And if we can encourage unbelievers to read my book itself, they will encounter Jesus Christ and be introduced to the wonder and grandeur of Heaven.

Although Will Dogs Chase Cats in Heaven has value as a point of contact, there is much more to the book than the eternal destiny of pets. Part of my research included scientific evidence for life after death for humans, in particular recent studies in brain science. Amazingly, I discovered that the same evidence for life after death for people qualified animals to share the same eternal destiny! I also explore fascinating research on animal behavior, which demonstrates that sentient animals have thoughts, feelings, and emotions similar to humans. In short, the book demonstrates beyond reasonable doubt that both Scripture and science confirm the reality of animals sharing the Eternal Kingdom with God’s people—and in resurrected bodies! ©

NEXT WEEK: My conclusion that wild and domesticated animals will inhabit Heaven is endorsed by many well-known Christian scholars, both past and present. Beginning in next week’s blog article, I will share what some of Christendom’s best known theologians have to say about animals in the afterlife: Martin Luther  John Calvin, Peter Kreeft (next week’s blog), Randy Alcorn, C. S. Lewis, and others.
